Addressing Health Education and Diversion (AHEAD) Program

The AHEAD Program is designed to support individuals facing criminal charges that are directly related to substance use disorders. This program offers an alternative path focused on recovery, education, and long-term stability rather than traditional measures.

Eligible Charges Include:

  • Felony Levels 4 & 5
  • Misdemeanor Levels 1 & 2

Through a combination of treatment, education, and community support, the AHEAD Program aims to reduce recidivism and promote lasting recovery.

General Requirements

  • Must be a resident of Wood County. (Out-of-county residents may be considered on a case-by-case basis.)
  • Must not have a recent or consistent history of violent behavior.
  • Must not have a history of mental illness that exceeds the treatment team’s scope of care.
  • Must not have a developmental disability or cognitive impairment that would prevent full participation and comprehension of the program.
  • Current and past criminal behavior must be primarily motivated by drug and/or alcohol use.

Disqualifying Factors

  • Evidence of significant drug trafficking activity.
  • Evidence of involvement in significant gang-related activity.
  • Referral based on a violation of R.C. 4511.19 (Operating a vehicle under the influence).
  • Any sexually oriented offense as defined in R.C. 2950.01(A).
  • Active holds or warrants from another jurisdiction.
  • Charges or convictions more serious than a Fourth-Degree Felony (F-4).

Applications are completed between the defense attorney and the defendant. They are then sent to the ARC Program Coordinator by email.
